Summary

Pre-order Stephen Fry's bewitching retelling of the legend of Troy - a tale of love and war, passion and power - following his sensational bestsellers MYTHOS and HEROES

'Troy。 The most marvellous kingdom in all the world。 The Jewel of the Aegean。 Glittering Ilion, the city that rose and fell not once but twice 。 。 。'

The story of Troy speaks to all of us - the kidnapping of Helen, a queen celebrated for her beauty, sees the Greeks launch a thousand ships against that great city, to which they will lay siege for ten whole and very bloody years。

It is Zeus, the king of the gods, who triggers war when he asks the Trojan prince Paris to judge the fairest goddess of them all。 Aphrodite bribes Paris with the heart of Helen, wife of King Menelaus of the Greeks, and naturally, nature takes its course。

It is a terrible, brutal war with casualties on all sides。 The Greeks cannot defeat the Trojans - since Achilles, the Greek's boldest warrior, is consumed with jealousy over an ally's choice of lover, the Trojan slave Briseis, and will not fight 。 。 。

The stage is set for the oldest and greatest story ever told, where monstrous passions meet the highest ideals and the lowest cunning。

In Troy you will find heroism and hatred, love and loss, revenge and regret, desire and despair。 It is these human passions, written bloodily in the sands of a distant shore, that still speak to us today。

Troy is a myth in which we seek the truth about ourselves, which Stephen Fry brings breathtakingly to life for our modern age。

PRAISE FOR MYTHOS AND HEROES:

'A romp through the lives of ancient Greek gods。 Fry is at his story-telling best 。 。 。 the gods will be pleased'
Times

'A head-spinning marathon of legends'
Guardian

'An Olympian feat。 The gods seem to be smiling on Fry - his myths are definitely a hit'
Evening Standard

'An odyssey through Greek mythology。 Brilliant 。 。 。 all hail Stephen Fry'
Daily Mail

'A rollicking good read'

All three of these Fry books were good and very enjoyable。 I was most familiar with the story of the Trojan War, so this was my least favorite of the three, but not the fault of the writer, it was still excellent。 4 stars。

this book is perfection。it's funny and sad and so easy to read even though there's so much going on。 stephen fry holds your hand while you navigate through the complicated storylines of the characters involved in the siege of troy。 as someone who finds classic greek mythology extremely overwhelming, this book was perfect to understand the intricacies of the trojan war。 ps。 from now on, stephen fry is my grandfather and no one is allowed to disagree。 this book is perfection。it's funny and sad and so easy to read even though there's so much going on。 stephen fry holds your hand while you navigate through the complicated storylines of the characters involved in the siege of troy。 as someone who finds classic greek mythology extremely overwhelming, this book was perfect to understand the intricacies of the trojan war。 ps。 from now on, stephen fry is my grandfather and no one is allowed to disagree。 。。。more

I ordered this as soon as the Kindle version came out and it did not disappoint! A very entertaining version of the Trojan War。“When she fell, a hole opened in the human world that may never be filled, save in memory。 Poets must sing the story over and over again, passing it from generation to generation, lest in losing Troy we lose a part of ourselves。”

Fun read。

Such a lively and modern interpretation and retelling of the Iliad, and by one of the greatest storytellers of our age!

Truth be told I’d give a 1st grader’s essay 5 stars if read out loud by Mr Fry。 Get the audiobook and never hate your commute again。

Stephen Fry manages to show both the ugliness of war, but also the complicated backstory of genecology that lead to this particular fight。 He doesn't hold back on how badly people acted, taking neither side, but showing how war robs people of humanity, and how much was lost when Troy fell。 Stephen Fry manages to show both the ugliness of war, but also the complicated backstory of genecology that lead to this particular fight。 He doesn't hold back on how badly people acted, taking neither side, but showing how war robs people of humanity, and how much was lost when Troy fell。 。。。more

I love all of Stephen Fry’s mythology retellings, so of course this one would be 5 stars too! Mythos is still my favourite and then Heroes, but that because they had more of a range of stories within them and i learned more as a result (though to be fair, i do know the trojan war in slightly ridiculous detail, so i would be VERY impressed if he managed to tell me much new info)Anyway, I think it was a really effective retelling, he added a good balance of humour as well as observing the harsher I love all of Stephen Fry’s mythology retellings, so of course this one would be 5 stars too! I would say it’s the best general overview of all the aspects of the war i’ve read so far, especially if you were approaching it with no prior knowledge!also, I find it interesting how differently authors present the key characters in each retelling, my opinion of them tends to vary with every version。 For example, this is the first retelling i’ve read where i don’t completely hate Agamemnon, like i still don’t respect him and most of his choices, but he wasn’t entirely despicable。 The characters still take the same key actions, otherwise it would be a different story, but their reasoning shifts, as does the way they present themselves Some authors tend to vilify some characters while glorifying others, which usually largely comes down to the perspective it’s written from。 I think that this is the most balanced narrative i’ve read, probably because it was from the perspective of an unbiased observer (well, unbiased-ish, in that stephen fry isn’t actually a character in the story), so he illustrates the positive aspects of each character in balance with their flawsSome characters still suck though *cough* Neoptolemus *cough*anyway the book was greatmaybe this time i’ll actually read the illiad, i know i said that last time but this time i’m seriousish, i mean i still haven’t read all the retellings i want to so who knowsbut one day i’ll read it i promise 。。。more

Stephen Fry is wonderful! Excellent as usual! Love the story of course, and his voice and little interludes。 Charming and interesting and fun, as well as one of the original and still best western stories ever told。

This series is just so well done。 The added narration that Stephen Fry does makes these books。 It breaks up just listening to an endless list of names and locations and give life and personality to the characters。 I personally like Mythos the best only because I enjoy stories of the gods more than those of mortal heroes。 I have read the Iliad as well so I knew what was coming but I think enjoyed this。 I think this book is a great companion to the Illiad and could be taught in classrooms。

A deep pleasure reading Fry’s account of the Iliad。 I am falling prey to comparing Troy to my recent reads by Madeleine Miller (Song of Achilles) and Natalie Haynes (A Thousand Ships)。 Whilst dearest Stephen Fry writes superbly, I was hoping for some more hitherto undiscovered context, interpetation and compassion。 I was very glad for his portrayal of Helen and Paris, Odysseus, and Priam; as well as the description of the Sacking。

I have read different versions of the story of Troy。 I have been confused by different versions of the story of Troy。 None have been as easy to follow and well explained as Stephen Fry's。 It's a marvel of well-organized data and carefully plotted characters and relations that simplify the incredibly complex work and the cast of characters of Homer into an easy to follow and understand narrative that lays out the folly and savagery of the war of Troy。Don't let the nigh unpronounceable names and c I have read different versions of the story of Troy。 I have been confused by different versions of the story of Troy。 None have been as easy to follow and well explained as Stephen Fry's。 It's a marvel of well-organized data and carefully plotted characters and relations that simplify the incredibly complex work and the cast of characters of Homer into an easy to follow and understand narrative that lays out the folly and savagery of the war of Troy。Don't let the nigh unpronounceable names and copious use of footnotes keep you from reading this。 The story itself is an epic for the ages for a reason, and this edition is the easiest to read I've ever encountered。 Many thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the educational read! 。。。more

Stephen Fry has an excellent way with words。 This was a very good retelling of the Illiad and went into much more details than I've previously read (not having actually read the Illiad myself)。 I thought it was interesting and smooth, with excellent pacing。 Having read this one, I would be very tempted to read his other two Greek mythology books as well。 Stephen Fry has an excellent way with words。 This was a very good retelling of the Illiad and went into much more details than I've previously read (not having actually read the Illiad myself)。 I thought it was interesting and smooth, with excellent pacing。 Having read this one, I would be very tempted to read his other two Greek mythology books as well。 。。。more

I really do adore this series。 Stephen Fry is an absolute master at making even the most complicated of the Greek Myths feel accessible, and that it's all finished off with a healthy dose of humour, and the odd tidbit of quite interesting little facts, and you've got a wonderful afternoon read。So wonderful, in fact, that I went right through the afternoon, into the evening, and suddenly realised at half one in the morning that I'd finished the whole thing。 I really do adore this series。 Stephen Fry is an absolute master at making even the most complicated of the Greek Myths feel accessible, and that it's all finished off with a healthy dose of humour, and the odd tidbit of quite interesting little facts, and you've got a wonderful afternoon read。So wonderful, in fact, that I went right through the afternoon, into the evening, and suddenly realised at half one in the morning that I'd finished the whole thing。 。。。more

This is Stephen Fry's third foray into his Greek Mythology Retold series。 I listened to Fry's narration of Troy, as I did with the first two。 Fry's voice is delicious。 I'm not sure why you'd want to read these at all, the audiobooks have got to be the far preferable way to consume them。 I read the Iliad earlier this year, and I've got to say that these two bodies of work complement each other really well。 I think you could take The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Stephen Fry's audio books and make a sol This is Stephen Fry's third foray into his Greek Mythology Retold series。 I listened to Fry's narration of Troy, as I did with the first two。 Fry's voice is delicious。 I'm not sure why you'd want to read these at all, the audiobooks have got to be the far preferable way to consume them。 I read the Iliad earlier this year, and I've got to say that these two bodies of work complement each other really well。 I think you could take The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Stephen Fry's audio books and make a solid Greek Mythology course out of them。 Or at least that's what it's felt like to consume them all in such a short period of time。 As for the work itself。 It contains Fry's usual cleverness。 I particularly appreciate Fry's continued contextual inserts that give historical or mythological context。 The format and delivery of Fry's mythologies is so rich and fun that I'm sure I'll listen to them many times in my life。 I have a feeling these will be pulled out on road trips and shared with my children when they're the right age and interest。 。。。more

Troy, the last book in Stephen Frye’s Mythos series did not disappoint。 The story of the taking of Helene and the fall of Troy is retold with more detail than the main source material, The Iliad。 Frye is an excellent narrator and is a master at bribing out the personalities of the long familiar characters of this tragedy。 I have seen the books in stores and they have beautiful pictures and illustrations, but Frye’s performance is worth devouring this trilogy in audio。

This was。。。comprehensive。 It wasn't bad, but, once I got started, I was never excited to pick it back up。 There's so very many names。 Fry does a great job of laying it all out and tying the pieces together but it is tedious, even with the occasional humorous quips。 This is getting rave reviews, so maybe it's just me or the timing。Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a digital review copy。 Publish date June 22, 2021。 This was。。。comprehensive。 It wasn't bad, but, once I got started, I was never excited to pick it back up。 There's so very many names。 Fry does a great job of laying it all out and tying the pieces together but it is tedious, even with the occasional humorous quips。 This is getting rave reviews, so maybe it's just me or the timing。Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a digital review copy。 Publish date June 22, 2021。 。。。more
